Wallpaper Removal
Wallpaper Removal
Removing wallpaper can be a daunting task, but with the right approach, it can be manageable. Here’s how to do it:
Preparation
Protect the Area: Lay drop cloths to protect the floor and furniture. Remove any switch plates, outlet covers, and nails from the walls.
Gather Tools and Supplies:
Wallpaper scorer
Wallpaper steamer or spray bottle
Scraper or putty knife
Sponge or cloth
Bucket
Dish soap
Vinegar or commercial wallpaper remover (optional)
Assess the Wallpaper Type
Strippable Wallpaper: Some wallpapers are designed to be easily removed. Start by peeling at a corner to see if it comes off in large sheets.
Traditional Wallpaper: Requires more effort and often the use of a steamer or chemical remover.
Scoring the Wallpaper
Score the Surface: Use a wallpaper scorer to create small perforations in the wallpaper. This allows water or remover solution to penetrate and loosen the adhesive.
Applying the Solution
Warm Water and Soap: Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap in a spray bottle.
Vinegar Solution: Mix equal parts vinegar and water for a more effective solution.
Commercial Remover: Follow the instructions on the label for mixing and application.
Spray the Wallpaper: Generously spray the wallpaper with the solution, allowing it to soak for several minutes.
Steaming
Steam the Wallpaper: If using a steamer, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to heat and apply steam to the wallpaper. This will help to loosen the adhesive.
Scraping
Remove the Wallpaper: Use a scraper or putty knife to gently lift and remove the wallpaper. Work slowly to avoid damaging the drywall or plaster underneath.
Repeat as Necessary: You may need to repeat the scoring, soaking, and scraping process multiple times for stubborn areas.
Clean the Walls
Remove Residue: Once the wallpaper is removed, wash the walls with a sponge and warm soapy water to remove any remaining adhesive.
Rinse and Dry: Rinse the walls with clean water and allow them to dry thoroughly before applying new wallpaper or paint.
